To Members and Friends of the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California:

Greetings!

As president for the year 1978, one of my goals is to continue the outstanding work done by my predecessor, President George Yee, and his very fine Cabinet and Board of Directors. To accomplish this, I am asking for your continued support.

At present, there are three major projects where volunteers are urgently needed:

  1. Oral history
  2. Newspaper Day – designated days to be spent in research and public libraries to ferret out little-known historical facts pertaining to early Chinese American history.
  3. Grantsmanship Committee-drafting proposals to request federal and private grants to finance certain projects such as the above-mentioned “oral history”.

Anyone interested in assisting with these, or any other projects, please contact me. You may be sure that your talents will be put to good use-without hesitation!

The Society will continue to support the Fiddletown Preservation Society in its efforts to prevent the Ideal Basic Industries from obtaining a permit from the Amador County Planning Commission to open a rock quarry in the vicinity. If the permit is granted, the historic Chew Kee herb shop would be doomed to a slow-but-certain destruction, due to vibrations of the 36-ton quarry trucks which would be allowed to roll through the main street of Fiddletown numerous times a day. Dr. Nancy Wey, a member of our Society, has written several excellent articles on the subject for EAST/WEST, San Francisco Chinatown’s weekly publication. On behalf of CHSSC, I would like to thank Dr. Wey for her outstanding research and assistance in our fight to save Fiddletown and the Chew Kee store.

These, then, are our major goals and interests at present. I have no doubts that each of you will participate in some way to help our Society go forward with continued success.

Thank you.

Gerald L. Shue
President
